How Do I Reset or Change My Password?

Warning

Your password gives access to university systems. Keep it private and do not share it with anyone.

How Do I Set Up Multifactor Authentication (MFA)?

MFA is required for access to Microsoft services and other university systems.

  1. Open portal.office.com and sign in with your full university email address, for example 12345678@sun.ac.za.
  2. When prompted for more information, choose Mobile App as the preferred method.
  3. Follow the prompts to install and register Microsoft Authenticator.
  4. If you do not have a smartphone, choose SMS and make sure your mobile number is correct in both student profile information and Microsoft security info.

What Is My University Email Address?

  • Your email address is your student number followed by @sun.ac.za, for example 12345678@sun.ac.za.
  • You can read your email in Outlook on the web.

How Do I Connect to Eduroam?

Start with the university Connectivity help page.

Before connecting, register your device:

  1. Connect to the Eduroam wireless network.
  2. Sign in with your full university email address and password.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions or use the step-by-step Eduroam guide.
  4. Repeat the process on each device you want to use.
  5. Use the interactive campus map to view Wi-Fi coverage.

Where Do I Find a Campus Map?

Where Do I Get Help with My Laptop or Smartphone?

The IT HUB walk-in centre can assist with many student device issues. Before visiting, search the IT support knowledge base to see whether a guide already solves the issue. You may need to make a booking before visiting.

How Do I Access the Internet on Campus?

Once you are connected to Eduroam or your residence network, you can browse the internet normally.

Note

Internet access is provided for academic and acceptable-use purposes. Abuse of the service can lead to restrictions.

How Do I Access EMSLearn or SUNLearn?

  1. Open EMSLearn or SUNLearn.
  2. Select Login.
  3. Sign in with your student number and university password.
  4. Open the module you want to access.

How Do I Print?

Warning

You need a valid student card to collect your print jobs at the printer.

  1. Make sure you have printing funds available.
  2. If you need help loading printing funds to your student account, follow Step 5 in the new student technology setup guide.
  3. Send your document to the STB_PRINT_Q01 printer queue on stbsc03.
  4. Go to any SafeCom-enabled printer and tap your student card on the SafeCom reader to release your print job.

How Do I Load Printing Credits Online?

In My.SUN, students can load funds for services such as student fees, washing, printing, shuttle services, and laptop deposits.

Menu path:

  • Undergraduate: Finances > Payment options > Fees - Student fees online payments > Card / EFT Payments > Payment by student > CAS login
  • Postgraduate: Accounts & Bursaries > Payment Options > Fees - Student fees online payments > Card / EFT Payments > Payment by student > CAS login

Printing Errors and Common Problems

Missing Credits or Credits Too Low

You may see this message if you scanned your card at another printer and the previous session did not log out correctly, for example because of a paper jam.

  1. If you cannot clear the paper jam, switch the printer off and on again.
  2. Wait 5 minutes, then try printing again.
  3. If your credits are still not released, report the issue through the FHARGA Service Desk.

What Is Phishing?

Phishing is an attempt to trick you into giving away sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, or banking details by pretending to be a trusted source.

  • Never share your university password.
  • Do not enter your password on websites or forms you do not recognise.
  • Keep up with current alerts through the IT X feed and the IT blog phishing category.
